Rubuguri Primary & Secondary School WASH Global Grant Project
Rotary Global Grant Number: GG2455013
Ronald Smith and his wife Sandy founded Friends of St. Kizito Rubuguri Primary School, a nonprofit organization, serving St. Kizito Rubuguri Primary School in Rubuguri, Uganda. Through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Tulare, California and Mbarara, Uganda, the couple have created a Rotary Global Grant for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH).
Project Scope
This Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project is part of a larger effort to improve life for the children in Rubuguri, Uganda. By focusing on hygiene behavior including improving sanitation facilities, adding rainwater collection systems, handwashing stations, menstruation supplies, incinerators, solar lighting, Sawyer International Tap Water Filters, and International Bucket System Filter Kits, and providing education and training, this initiative will be the starting point for campus improvements that will transcend the campus environment to the home environment. The overall project will help ensure that the schools meet Uganda national standards for WASH in schools while the community participates in and benefits from changing behaviors.
Project Schools
The project is focused on serving five schools and one church serving more than twenty-five hundred students in Rubuguri, Uganda. The schools include four primary schools (St. Peter’s, St. Kizito, Gisharu, and Igabiro) and one secondary school (St. Joseph’s Vocational Secondary School).
Cooperating Organizations and Partners
• Rotary Club of Mbarara, Uganda (Host Club)
• Rotary Club of Tulare, California (International Partner)
We are promoting our organization and the opportunity to provide service in Uganda while visiting one of the most beautiful places in the world. We are looking for partners to meet the needs of the community while also meeting Rotary areas of focus (Water and Sanitation, Basic Education and Literacy). We welcome the opportunity to share our story with you! We will show pictures of the school and share our safari, chimpanzee, and gorilla tracking experiences in Uganda. We’ll present upcoming projects and invite you to join us in making a difference in a needy community with smiling faces.
