In this program, you will enhance your ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of difficult people—and determine whether you are difficult too! By altering how you perceive and respond to temperament and behavior, you will be able to accommodate the most challenging personalities. This program will apply the techniques and methods discussed in three of Dr. Patrick’s books Reading People, Red Flags, and Why Bad Looks Good, augmented with the latest cutting-edge research, to the art of effectively communicating with difficult people in a variety of settings.

Reading People and Predicting Behavior
Wouldn’t it be great to know how to read a person “like a book?” You can. This seminar will show you how to do it . . . quickly. Incorporating the tips and tactics discussed in the revised version of the New York Times bestseller Reading People, Dr. Patrick will reveal in an entertaining and interactive format, how to perceive the most important clues about other people, what it means, and how to use the information you glean.

Social Climate Change: Socializing in an Age of Political Correctness
Remember some of the words used, and jokes people made when we were growing up? Can you imagine the reaction socially if such language was used today? How have we become so sensitive as a society? More importantly, how can you make sure you do not accidentally cross the line?

As we struggle to be both social and socially sensitive, it is important to know what topics are off limits. There are words we should never use. But are still “safe spaces” that we can speak freely? If so, where are they? This program will explore how socializing has evolved over the last few decades, and how to safely have a polite conversation. With a combination of humor and caution, this class will identify topics that are still safe to discuss, and those you should avoid like the plague.

Wendy L. Patrick, J.D., M.Div., Ph.D. is a San Diego Rotarian with perfect attendance, who regularly speaks to other Rotary clubs around the world on a wide range of topics that are motivational, inspirational, and educational. She is a career prosecutor, having completed over 165 trials ranging from hate crimes to domestic violence to first-degree murder. Acknowledging her significant contributions as a public servant, Dr. Patrick was presented by the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court with the California Public Lawyer of the Year award from the State Bar’s Public Law Section and has received numerous awards and accolades for her work over the last 30 years.
Dr. Patrick currently presents a wide variety of programs and trainings, and works as a consultant in areas including behavioral analysis, sexual harassment, interpersonal violence, the psychology of attraction, and threat assessment. She is author of Red Flags, co-author of the New York Times bestseller Reading People (revision), and author of Why Bad Looks Good—also the title of her column in Psychology Today which she has had for over 10 years. On a personal note, Ms. Patrick holds a purple belt in Shorin-Ryu karate, is a concert violinist with the La Jolla Symphony, and plays the electric violin professionally with a rock band.
