Overview

In his presentation, Jay Williams shares the story of how his experience as a pastor led him to ask a challenging question: if a church disappeared, would the community even notice? That question sparked the vision for OC United, founded to bring people of faith and people of goodwill together to serve their cities in practical ways. Rather than churches serving communities alone, Williams describes building a collaborative model that brings together nonprofits, businesses, schools, city government, and residents to address real needs such as foster care, domestic abuse, and struggling neighborhoods.
A central part of the talk explains the “Love Our Cities” volunteer model, where thousands of volunteers participate in city-wide service days—such as “Love Fullerton”—to complete projects that beautify neighborhoods, help vulnerable residents, and strengthen community relationships. These events act as a catalyst, connecting volunteers with ongoing initiatives so service continues year-round. Williams highlights how this simple but powerful model has expanded across Southern California and beyond, demonstrating how collaboration across churches, civic groups, and local leaders can transform communities.
